The Asian Challenge

Asia is the new centre of economic growth in the world. For Europe, knowledge of Asian societies is vital to delineate the strategic challenges that lie ahead and to counteract misunderstandings that may lead us to take the wrong decisions in investments, international relations or domestic policies. With its long multidisciplinary tradition of research on China, Japan, India, Korea, and Indonesia and the region’s languages, Leiden University is ideally suited to study the civilizations, cultures, histories, economies, languages, and systems of law and governance of East, South and Southeast Asia as well as the transnational position of Asia in the world. Appraising debates and dilemmas within Asia calls for a deep familiarity with its the languages and communities.
