Communication in Science

Various forms of oral and written presentations will be looked at from the perspective of interaction, paying particular attention to linguistic aspects. The course is tailor-made for PhD students frm the Science Faculty.

Target group

PhD students, especially from the science departments, (beta, biomedical & medicine) in their first or second year.
PhD students from other faculties can participate if there are places free.


Objective

To enable participants to critically evaluate both their own oral and written communication and that of others.

Course content

  • interaction in presenting and writing

  • communicating more effectively in speaking and writing

  • presenting research results

  • writing a paper: readability, cohesion and coherence, abstracts, readers's perspective

  • language instruction

Working method

The course makes use of several methods, including peer review, video training, individual language sessions (if needed).
Participants use their own material so that they can use what they have learned directly in their own research.

COURSES IN 2012:

Course 2:

Wednesdays 9, 16, 23, 30 May, 6 and 13 June, and -if indicated by the course tutors- language sessions on Thursdays 24 May and 13 June. Time: 9.30 am - 1 pm.
Venue: LUMC, Building 1, Albinusdreef 2, first day in room J1-83

Tuesdays 25 September, 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 October, and -if indicated by the course tutors- language sessions on Thursdays 11 and 25 October. Time: 1 pm - 4.30 pm.

Thursdays 15, 22 and 29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December, and -if indicated by the course tutors- language sessions on Tuesdays 4 and 18 December. Time 9.30 - 13.00 pm.  (fully booked)

Costs

PhDs: free of charge
For staff of Leiden University: € 750
External participants: € 900

Cancellation

In the event of cancellation within two weeks before the first training session or if the preparation requested has not been received in time, we will charge the full fee of € 750.
